Do you want to fancy up you biscuits and cakes to impress your guests and have some fun in the kitchen with your kids? Well I have an easy tutorial showing you how to paint roses on fondant with edible food gel that will wow! everybody and you don’t even need to be an artist.
PAINTING ROSES ON FONDANT
You can use the technique below to paint on anything covered in fondant, like biscuits or cakes. I like to make a batch of my shortbread biscuits because they are so light, buttery, flaky and melt in your mouth but you can use any type of cookie or cake you desire or whatever you want to cover in fondant.
HOW TO COVER BISCUITS AND CAKE WITH FONDANT
When I cover my biscuits in fondant I like to measure my cookies with a cookie cutter and get a cookie cutter a little bit smaller than my biscuit and use it to cut out fondant circles. I alternate between using the scalloped edge of my cookie cutter for a more fancier look and the standard circle for something a little different.
When you cut out your fondant place it straight onto your biscuit. I find if I add my fondant straight after I cut it, the fondant sticks straight on and I don’t need to add any jam as a glue, but you can if you want to add some flavour.
When it comes to cake add your fondant as you normally would.
WHAT KIND OF PAIN TO USE
To paint roses on fondant you need to use food gel paste not liquid food colouring.
LIQUID FOOD COLOURING
If you use the liquid food colouring it will be like you are giving your fondant a white wash and it will be all watery and make the sugar dissolve, wich will make your fondant mushy and sticky.
FOOD GEL PASTE
Use food gel paste because it will come out thick and it will be like you are using paint.
You can also add a drop of vodka to your paint which will loosen up the gel a bit and give the colour a little more flow while you paint and it will also make your roses more shiny. In my tutorial below and the pictures you see here I haven’t used any vodka. I have used the food gel straight out of the pot.

ROSES
Add some red food gel paste to your brush and dab little circles around your fondant. Wiggle your brush to make them look fluffy, this will give the look of a few petals. Add a little more red or whatever colour you are making your roses to your brush and dab on one side of each circle to give it a 3d effect.
LEAVES
Using your thinnest brush add some green food gel and in a quick sweeping motion paint on your leaves. You can add 1 or 2 it is up to you. I also like to add a few loose leaves too because I think it makes the picture look more fancy.
